Multiple insulated cores within
a silicone outer jacket.
UL 4476 addresses a multicore cable with a silicone outer jacket. The core insulation, assembly and jacket all belong to the cable specification—choosing a recognised single wire does not define the finished cable.
THE ROLE OF THIS STYLE
When several connections share one cable route, the outer jacket brings individually insulated cores into a common assembly. That assembly has its own dimensions, identification and use requirements.
UL 4476 describes a complete jacketed multicore cable, rather than a single insulated wire.

A connector entry must fit the finished cable—not the diameter of one insulated core.Internal or external wiring and the corresponding construction.
Confirm the applicable cable version and recognition for the equipment.Recognised individual cores do not automatically establish recognition of the finished multicore cable.
READ THE COMPLETE ASSEMBLY
These are separate layers with separate specifications. The outer jacket is not a substitute for the insulation between conductors.
Each conductor has its own insulating layer. Define the core material and conductor construction before assembling the cable.
Each core’s size, stranding, insulation, diameter and identification.
Insulated cores are brought together. A separator, filler or screen can change the construction and finished size.
Core arrangement, any mixed sizes, and the presence and purpose of additional layers.
A separate silicone layer covers the assembly. Its dimensions are part of the selected construction.
Jacket material, finished diameter, dimensional tolerance and the required use version.
The image shows an unscreened example. If screening is required, specify the screen construction and connection requirements separately; a black jacket does not indicate whether a screen is present.
A MATERIAL DIFFERENCE IN THE SPECIFICATION
The historical style distinguishes two constructions. They differ in use, flame-test basis and jacket requirements—not merely in their names.
Historical UL 4476 construction distinctions. Verify the current requirements for the exact cable. On a small screen, swipe across the table.
| What changes? | Construction AINTERNAL WIRING | Construction BEXTERNAL WIRING |
|---|---|---|
| Use in the style reference | Internal wiring | External wiring |
| Flame-test reference | Horizontal flame | Cable flame |
| Jacket minimums | A-specific requirements, selected by diameter beneath the jacket | Higher minimums than A for the same diameter band in the historical table |
| What to request | The construction and recognition appropriate to the internal connection | The construction and recognition appropriate to the external connection |
Basis: UL 4476 historical style reference. No jacket dimensions should be taken from the illustration.
External wiring is not an outdoor-use rating. Outdoor, immersion and continuous-motion suitability are separate requirements.
SAME OUTER MATERIAL, DIFFERENT CORES
Both constructions below appear in supplier UL 4476 ranges. Define the inside and outside materials separately.
Silicone is used at both levels: around each conductor and around the assembled cable. The core insulation and jacket still have their own dimensions and formulations.
The outer jacket remains silicone while the core insulation uses a different material. This is a material change inside the cable, even if the outside looks similar.

BEFORE YOU SPECIFY
No. A similar material and shape do not establish product recognition. Confirm the complete cable construction, marking and current documentation.
A mixed-size assembly is possible within the style framework, but the complete arrangement must be specified and covered by the actual construction. Include the size and identity of every core group.
No. Screening is a separate construction choice. Specify whether it is required and how it must connect; the illustration shows no screen.
UL 4476 describes a jacketed multicore cable. Single-conductor specifications describe individual insulated wires.
FROM STYLE TO PRODUCT SPECIFICATION
